This Thursday each student will be sent home with our newest fundraiser packet. This fundraiser will run for 2 weeks (10/13 to 10/31) and products will be delivered on 11/9

Chick-Fil-A Night

SHA will have a Spirit Night at the South Tampa Chick-Fil-A. The school will receive 15% of all sales from customers with an SHA flier that night.

The next Chik-Fil-A Spirit Night will be: September 15, 2011 Chik-Fil-A 609 S. Dale Mabry Hwy. 5 to 8 p.m. So take the night off from the kitchen and have dinner with other SHA families!

Earn and Learn Educational Game Show

Yesterday our SHA students attended the Earn and Learn assembly and went home with paperwork. Earn and Learn is the first official fundraiser of the school year.

Earn and Learn is an exciting Game Show fundraiser that uses a state of the art game show set up and a dynamic game show host. Students have a fantastic time learning while reinforcing subjects they have been taught in class.

The program comes complete with a live kick off assembly, prize party, and 10 different prize levels. We even have an incentive for the teachers. Imagine getting donations from parents who say "Thank you for not having me buy overpriced candy, candles, wrapping paper, etc". Parents will appreciate the fact that you are promoting their children's education and not tooth decay.

The goal of Earn and Learn is to use a "Game Show" format where students compete to earn points for prizes and learn while raising money for their school or organization.

Our fundraiser will start Sept 2nd and all money collected is due Sept. 16th
The Game Show and Dance will be held on October 17th

Prizes (ALL prizes are cumulative):

Turn in $1.00 or more—get out of class to attend a cool, fun, exciting dance party

$25.00—receive a NO Homework Pass and $3.00 to spend in the Holiday Shop.

In these hard economic times, the school is counting on us (the parents) even more than ever. The best news of all is you can contribute to the school without impacting your budget. Now this might seem a little hard to believe, but it is true. Many of you already know about Target REDcard donating 1% of your purchases to SHA. You also know about Labels for Education (Campbell’s/V8/Pepperidge Farm) points, which are used for school equipment, Project A+ (Tyson Chicken) donating $.24 per label, and Box Tops donating $.10 per label, but we have also started a partnership with TerraCycle.

TerraCycle will recycle our trash and turn it into a usable product. I’m sure you have seen the collection bins in the cafeteria, but you might not be aware of all the things we can recycle. Below is an explanation of the various “brigades” we have indicated an interest in participation.

Drink Pouch Brigade ($.02 per pouch) We accept any kind of brand of drink pouches.

Chip Bag Brigade ($.02 per bag) We accept any empty brand or size chip bag.

Candy Wrapper Brigade ($.02 per wrapper) We will accept any brand and size candy wrappers. *Great news with Halloween right around the corner. Fun size and bite size wrappers accepted.

Cookie wrapper Brigade ($.02 per wrapper) We are collecting all brands and sizes of cookie wrappers.

Lunch Kit Brigade ($.02 each) We accept any brand and any size lunch kit packaging. We will accept all parts of the lunch kit, excluding the cardboard.

Home Storage Brigade ($.02 per container or 10 bags) We are collecting any used Ziploc® bags and containers, or like products.

Energy Bar Wrapper Brigade ($.02 per wrapper) All energy, granola, nutrition, cereal, and protein bars with an inner foil lining are acceptable.

Colgate Oral Care Brigade ($.02 per piece) We accept any brand used toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes and plastic toothbrush packaging, excluding cardboard. Please place in zippered plastic bag.

Elmer’s Glue Crew Brigade ($.02 each) Only Elmer’s! We accept any size Elmer’s brand glue sticks and plastic glue bottles.

Scotch Tape Brigade ($.02 each) We accept any brand and any size plastic tape dispensers and cores.

NEOSPORIN® Tube Brigade ($.02 each) We accept any brand and any size antibiotic ointment tube.

Spreads Brigade ($.02 each) We accept any brand and any size of spread tubs and lids. Examples include butter, margarine and cream cheese spread tubs.

Scott Brand Brigade ($.02 each) We accept any brand and any size of outer plastic wrapping from paper products.

Gum Package Brigade ($.02 each) We accept any brand and any size gum wrapper & multipack bags, foil packs, clear cellophane and exterior wrappers. An example would be – a package of Stride gum, the plastic wrap around the package and the individual wrappers on each piece of gum.

Each brigade pays separately and only twice a year. We have already started to send in shipments of drink pouches, chip bags, and wrappers from cookies and candy. The more we recycle the less we contribute to the landfill, the more money we return to the school and the better we can feel about the contributions we are making. Together we can make a difference.

Family Fun Night

It's time again for Sacred Heart Academy's annual Family Fun Night. Enjoy dinner and games with your kids and our SHA family.

Join us on Friday, September 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. Dinner includes cuban sandwiches from La Teresita, pulled pork, drinks, dessert and more!

There'll be a bounce house (thank you to Happy Jumping) and a music activity from the Patel Conservatory. Sports activities include a hitting net, softball and volleyball.

Please help us plan accordingly for food by purchasing your tickets in advance!

If purchased by Friday, Sept. 16, the cost for SHA families is $6/adults and $3/children 10 and under.

Ticket prices go up the week of the event. Starting Sept. 17, tickets are $7/adults, and $5/children 10 and under.

Each month, Sacred Heart Academy hosts a fundraising event at your local Sweet Tomatoes. All you have to do is have dinner at one of the Sweet Tomatoes listed below and show the flyer sent home in the backpacks. Open Heart Club Board Postions

The Heart Club is looking for new people to join our board. Below you will find the positions open as well as a brief description of the responsiblities:

The 2nd Vice President:
-Act as the coordinator and liaison to the chairperson for all social and on going fundraising activities (e.g., P.E. Sales, Used Uniform Sales, Ice Cream Sales, Box Tops, Sweet Tomatoes).
-Act as an ex-officio member of events under the 2nd VP position.
-Coordinates all Principal and Heart Club related social events.
-Assists chairpersons, in updating procedures and manuals as needed.
-Reviews the summaries compiled by chairperson of each event (Within two weeks of the event or by last week of school for year-round events, these summaries will be prepared, reviewed and given to the Recording Secretary for archiving)

The Homeroom Liaison Coordinator shall:(1 more person needed)
-Creates and maintains the master list of homeroom parents with contact information – provides to Volunteer Coordinator.
-Compiles data/forms for the homeroom parent packets in coordination with the President
-Conducts homeroom parent orientation meeting.
-Maintains regular communications with all the homeroom parents.
-E-mails then place a follow-up call to homeroom parents when requesting they make calls to their class.
-Addresses homeroom parent concerns with the President and/or Board.

The Volunteer Coordinator:(2 people needed)
-Provides volunteer sign up sheets for all Heart Club events and coordinates a committee person for each event to be present to answer questions.
-Provides and collects attendance lists at general Heart Club or school meetings (Lists should be provided within one week to the appropriate individual for Parent Hour processing).
-Compiles and maintains the master list of homeroom parents and known event chairpersons.
-Compiles and maintains contact information on all families.
-Works with chairpersons in getting volunteers.
-Provides and disseminates lists of parent volunteers to the Vice Presidents for each event.
-Acts as the contact for families looking to earn hours.
-Provides volunteer opportunities to Recording Secretary for newsletter

The President-Elect:
-Will undergo the Executive Board's selection process.
-Shadows the President during the 2nd year term
***This position is for anyone interested in filling the President position for the 2012-2014 school years.

The Event Chairperson:
-Completes event summaries, including financial reports, and provides to the assigned VP for review and approval.
-Obtains Board approval on event plan prior to commencement of significant activity.
-Obtains Board approval for significant changes to originally-approved plans.
-Obtains approval for all event correspondence prior to distribution.
-Follows process/procedures documented in event binder and updates as needed changes/new instances arise.

Mother/Daugther Tea Help NEEDED!!!!

Hi everyone! Assistance is needed to help create a wonderful memory for mothers and daughters. The Heart Club is in need of the following:
Volunteers to help make sandwiches the morning of May 14th
Teacups
Saucers
Creamer dishes
Teapots
Sugar dishes
Dessert plates
Three dish tea towers with plates

If you are a garage sale hound or just have the time to check out some in your area, would you keep an eye out for these items? If you can, it would be great if you can make this a donation (receipt counting off towards parent hours). Below is an image of what an actual teacup looks like. I know it seems silly, but some cups are coffee cups with saucers and other are what they call a coffee/tea cup. We are not looking for matching patterns since we are doing what is called a "shabby sheik,” but we would like the cups to be of the same basic style if possible.

Please contact me if you have any further questions or are able to obtain any of the items. I am happy to meet you to get dish items so you do not have to store them or clean them for the event. Remember it is especially helpful if you are able to donate them! We plan to use these each year!

Guest Speaker @ the National Jr. Honor Society Induction Ceremony

Mrs. Brenda Brother, Rev. Bernard La Fayette Jr. will be speaking to the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, grade classes on Friday, April 15th at Sacred Heart Academy for the National Junior Honor Society. Her brother was a Freedom Rider who traveled and marched with Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. He will speaking on Non-violence and bullying. He also will be appearing on OPRAH next month for a book that was written. He was featured in Sunday‘s St. Pete Times.

Toddler Sizes: The Heart Club only carries toddler sizes in the PE & Spirit Shirt, I have spoken with Educational Outfitters, and if you are in need of sweats and pe shorts, you will have to place an order to be picked up at a later date.

PE Shorts: Once we run out of stock EO will begin to sell PE Shorts in youth and adult sizes. Changes:

The plaid skort: EO does not carry the cut we currently wear so the one they carry will have a flap to make it look like a skirt.

Student Council UPDATE!!!

Student Council will be selling TAMPA Yankee tickets as soon as we get them for the season opener on April 8--- tickets will be $2 and SHA gets to keep 100% of the proceeds!!!

Last year Student Council used all monies raised to pay for the newly painted and repaired marquee sign at the street ($1300), and we purchased new PE equipment($900).

So far this year- we have contributed to the donation of 200lbs of pet food for the Humane Society, we donated about 600lbs of food to Metropolitan Ministries, we collected ABOVE AND BEYOND for Elves for Elders for Christmas, and our goal for the use of monies this year is undetermined as of yet- but we have a few things in mind that will make SHA student body feel very proud of themselves for!!

The parents/friends continued support is so appreciated!

Lenten Soup Dinner Volunteers Needed

SHA families have been asked to help with Lenten Soup Dinner on 4/1 and 4/22 from 6:00pm to 8pm.

SHC needs several volunteers to help set up, serve and clean up. The church is also in need of people to make/donate soup for the dates listed above.

This is a great chance to earn some parent hours please contact Sean Fitzsimmons-Brown @ 813-229-1595 if you are interested in volunteering.

If you can not work either date but can make soup you will earn parent hours for the amount spent on materials needed to make the soup as well as the time spent cooking. Walk a Thon

Walkathon on Friday, February 4th. Please ask co-workers and family members to sponsor your child while they walk to raise money for our school!

All children will actively participate in this event, if able. Every child is required to raise a minimum of $25.00 in pledges to make this a success. All pledges, no matter the amount, are greatly appreciated! This is a fun event for the kids, they help raise money for their school and exercise at the same time! Money can be turned in on the day of the Walkathon or turned in to your classroom teacher no later than February 17th.

The event will start around 10:30 am on Friday. The students will be walking for 45
minutes to one hour. The track will be set up for the event with live music, give-a-ways, bananas, drinks and maybe a special guest will participate! In case of rain, the event will be in the gym. Each class that has 100% of their students turn in at least one pledge will receive an ice cream party and a free dress passes on the day of the party!!!

The rules of the Walkathon are as follows:
1. No running
2. All students must stay in the track area until dismissed back to the classroom with their teacher
3. All students using restroom must check in with a teacher or adult volunteer
4. Each student will be allowed one “cut across” lap (cut across the middle of the track)
5. Each student who completes a “backward lap” will receive the equivalent of 2 laps
6. In case of rain, the students will be taken into the gym and specific age groups will walk while other groups will remain in the bleachers (3 laps around the gym will equal 1 lap)

Parents are welcome to attend, volunteer to this event. Volunteers are needed to help tally the laps as students complete each lap, help tally the totals, and some to keeping our students motivated! Gasperilla Childrens Parade

On January 22nd, 2010 our school will once again show it's SHA spirit in the Gasparilla Children's Parade. Students ages 6 and under required to ride on one of the fire trucks or can be pulled in a wagon by their parent. All other grades will walk side by side in their RED SHA Spirits and toss beads into the crowd.

Give-A-Ways: SHA will provide a limited supply of SHA Cups and Mini Footballs

On behalf of the Heart Club we wish everyone good luck on the Middle School Exams this week.

Here are some test taking tips:

Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep before a test, and make sure your child eats properly the day of a test.
Try to make the morning of the test a pleasant one. Do not add to your child’s stress.
Make sure your child has taken any needed medication.\
Ensure that your child is present during testing (children generally perform better when taking tests in their groups rather than at a make-up time).
Get your child to school on time the day of the test.
Wish your child good luck each morning of the test. Tell your child that he/sheis special and that you believe in him/her!
Remind your child the test is important. Encourage him/her to do his/her best.
If your child is too ill to attend, please call the school office.
If the test is on a subject for which you can review (such as a spelling test), help your child go over the material.
Remind your child to listen carefully to the instructions from the teacher and to read the directions and each question carefully.
Explain to your child the importance of using time wisely. If your child gets stuck on a question, encourage him or her to make the best guess and move on.
Tell your child to attempt to answer all of the questions and not to leave any blank.
Encourage your child to stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early.
If your child is disappointed after taking a test, reassure him or her that there will be plenty of opportunities to improve and succeed.

What Is Scrip?

Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenue for our organization.

How scrip generates revenue for us

The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non‑profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Our organization buys the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to families like yours for full face value. The discount ‑ from two to fifteen percent or more – is our organization’s revenue.

Important Uniform Info

Please understand that the SHA logo hoodie is for track and basketball ONLY this hoodie is NOT to be worn with ANY of your school uniforms.

Tomorrow at 8:30 is our Veterans Day Celebration- parents/family/friends are invited to walk the elipse with us and say the Pledge of Allegiance outside.

Also- a reminder that students can still pay $2 for RED/White/BLUE dress for tomorrow. IF they do not pay- they are to be in regular uniform or risk a discipline warning!

WE ARE NOW COLLECTING FOOD for Metropolitan Ministries!!! Each class has their assigned items- please stick to the assigned items ONLY….the barrels are up and outside the classrooms- except 3rd grade- they share a barrel with 4th and 5th so it’s upstairs! 5th grade will carry their food up in the morning if it’s warranted.

LETS FILL THE BARRELS – they get picked up on the 23rd.

Red Ribbon Week

Every day this week student council will be giving out a ‘little something’ to each student to remind them to ‘say no to drugs’. We have speakers every morning speaking about the history of, reasons to avoid, a recipe to stay drug free, etc. that is read aloud to the student assembly. Tomorrow there is a guest speaker for grades 4-8 at 10am- he is the Substance Abuse Counselor for the New York Yankees that Mrs. Bradley hooked up for us.

Thursday is the ‘Wear your tie-dyed’ shirt to go along with the tie-dye sticker that will be given out---- if you cannot wear tie-dye; spirit shirt is to be worn.

The Evening of Chance fundraising event is held each November by the HEART Club and is the largest fundraising event for Sacred Heart Academy. Each parent is required to purchase one ticket to this event. Safety Class and Fingerprinting are MANDATORY!!!

In order to volunteer in your child's class or at the school ALL adults must pass a Level 2 Criminal Background Check and attend the Safe Environment Training for Access to Children.

These rules are set by the Diocese and SHA has no control over their guidelines. We understand that many of our parents hold city, county or government jobs and you have more then likely passed their background check however the Diocese requires they perform their own check. The cost for finger printing and safety class if $50 made payable to SHA.

Trunk or Treat!

Sacred Heart Academy would like to invite you to come out and celebrate Halloween with us.

This is a safe and unique way to trick or treat by going “trunk to trunk” in a family friendly, festive atmosphere. Individuals or groups can decorate a car trunk and provide candy to the little ghosts, goblins, and princesses.

This event is FREE for all Sacred Heart Academy families, friends, and Sacred Heart Parrish members.

Our Tailgating Halloween Party will be held in the parking lot of Sacred Heart Academy (3515 N. Florida Ave.). Gates will open at 5:30 to allow everyone time to set up and the fun will begin at 6pm. Please understand that for safety reasons all vehicles MUST remain off and no one will be able to leave until 8pm.

There will be a car-decorating contest and the winner will have the honor of receiving the First Annual Trunk or Treat Blue Ribbon. The Blue Ribbon winner will be given the chance to select their parking spot next year and will be given 30 minutes extra to decorate.

A great time at Family Fun Night!

Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time at Family Fun Night. The event is always a great way to kick off the school year and enjoy social time with our SHA family. It’s certainly a favorite for all our kids.

The Bounce House and Verizon HD TV/gaming truck were both a huge hit. Thank you to Happy Bouncing and to Verizon for their generosity. (If interested in supporting their businesses, their information has been put in the parent center in the office.)

Great job from the Student Council students who worked throughout the evening, and from the Heart Beats for their amazing performance.

There was so much going on throughout the night. The face painting was a popular spot. Thanks to Bridget Gutierrez for bringing and sharing her personal supply.

The kids also enjoyed a fun game of parent/kids volleyball, kickball, a hula hoop contest, coloring, tatoos and popcorn and a movie.

Of course, many volunteers contributed to the success of the evening. Special thanks to those who gave an exceptional amount of time and energy: Michele Williams (who helped coordinate the event), Rosemarie and Gary Roo, Charlie Doan, Susan Brown, Telicia Jordan and Shelly Zapata.

Thanks as well, to the 7th and 8th graders, Denise Costanzo, Katie Zapata, Theresa Taylor, Laura Prather and Frank Vari, Denise Mongiovi, Tammy Miller, Olga Siegenthaler, Bill Valder, Vicky McCarthy, Ildes Alpizar, David and Jennifer Williams, Ramona Semackor and everyone else who pitched in and helped everything run smoothly.
